mistressofmuses: a stack of books in the colors of the bi pride flag: pink, purple, and blue, in front of a pastel rainbow background (books)
Written for the tenth day of the 2017 "Holigay" prompt challenge.

The prompt was: "Write about a family (or a group that considers themselves family) with different beliefs and how they blend and balance them for the holidays."

Summary: Jesse, Natalie, and Yvette all have their own holiday traditions.

Fluffy, slice-of-life. Stars the same characters as "What Were the Odds?"

Traditions )
mistressofmuses: a stack of books in the colors of the bi pride flag: pink, purple, and blue, in front of a pastel rainbow background (books)
Written for the ninth day of the 2017 "Holigay" prompt challenge.

The prompt was: "You are out with your S.O. ice skating on a local lake but due to unfortunate events, the ice cracks and you fall through. However, you quickly realize it’s not water underneath the ice."

Summary: Tabitha is determined to find out who has placed signs warning people away from her favorite ice skating pond, and why they'd be trying to keep people away.

Fantasy/sci-fi.

Thin Ice )
mistressofmuses: a stack of books in the colors of the bi pride flag: pink, purple, and blue, in front of a pastel rainbow background (books)
Written for the eighth day of the 2017 "Holigay" prompt challenge.

The prompt was: "There’s nothing harder than having a polyamorous relationship during the holidays. Having two families come together for the holidays is hard, but when your three-person couple celebrates the holidays the house is suddenly much more lively than before."

Summary: Devin, Kay, and Shell decide to celebrate the milestone of moving in together by hosting Christmas for the families. This is great for Devin and Kay... less so for Shell, whose family refuses to support or acknowledge her relationship.

TW for themes of familial rejection and an instance of non-malicious deadnaming.

Slight angst, slice-of-life.

Full House )
mistressofmuses: a stack of books in the colors of the bi pride flag: pink, purple, and blue, in front of a pastel rainbow background (books)
Written for the seventh day of the 2017 "Holigay" prompt challenge.

The prompt was: "Two or more of your characters have just realized they didn’t get anything for each other for the holidays! They all rush to the nearest shopping center, coincidentally on the same day, and desperately attempt to not let them see each other. Or, if they do see each other they try to play it off real cool like and try to hide the presents."

Summary: Jesse, Natalie, and Yvette all wind up at the mall, attempting last-minute shopping for their partners... without getting spotted.

Fluffy, slice-of-life.

What Were the Odds? )

Note in 2023: This is my other favorite of the pieces I wrote for this challenge. It was fun, and I enjoyed all three of the characters, even though I'd just created them for this prompt.
A lot of the challenge's prompts lent themselves mostly toward fluffy fills, which was on-purpose for the whole seasonal cheer thing. Lots of them were also specific enough prompts that they mainly also suited slice-of-life sorts of fills, which are rarely something I write... yet I *did* really enjoy this one.
mistressofmuses: a stack of books in the colors of the bi pride flag: pink, purple, and blue, in front of a pastel rainbow background (books)
Written for the sixth day of the 2017 "Holigay" prompt challenge.

The prompt was: "If it’s a fanfic, make it an AU: One of your characters develops superpowers, and Charlie Brown-esque, accidentally puts Santa Claus (or a St. Nick-ish figure) out of commission. Now they have to fill in for them for the night. (If your character’s not Christian, take the opportunity to make several ironic jokes… I know I will!)"

Summary: Grace just wants Jazz to feel the magic of the holidays, both despite and because of the stress that's consumed her life. Unfortunately, there are some unintended consequences to the attempt.

Fluffy, fantasy.

Spirit of the Season )
mistressofmuses: a stack of books in the colors of the bi pride flag: pink, purple, and blue, in front of a pastel rainbow background (books)
Written for the fifth day of the 2017 "Holigay" prompt challenge.

The prompt was: "Your characters meet at a coffee shop and bond over their shared hatred of peppermint flavored drinks. When they leave, one of the characters is pretty sure they’ll never see the other person again, but guess whose number they find in their pocket?"

Summary: Brenden ducks into a coffee shop for a drink on his way to class, and meets a very cute stranger.

Fluffy, slice-of-life/meet-cute.

Holiday Special )
mistressofmuses: a stack of books in the colors of the bi pride flag: pink, purple, and blue, in front of a pastel rainbow background (books)
Written for the fourth day of the 2017 "Holigay" prompt challenge.

The prompt was: "You found the old silk hat that turned Frosty into a walking talking snowman. Turns out, the hat works on other things too."

Summary: Laurel has always had a fascination with strange, unique objects. She's fully aware that the "magic top hat" is just an object with a fun story attached. Of course it's not really magical. Of course.

Fluffy, fantasy.

Must Have Been Some Magic )
mistressofmuses: a stack of books in the colors of the bi pride flag: pink, purple, and blue, in front of a pastel rainbow background (books)
Written for the third day of the 2017 "Holigay" prompt challenge.

The prompt was: "Pick 3 (or more) elements and incorporate them: a children’s game, a box of matches, a blizzard, a spell book, betrayal, a torn letter, a secret someone already knew, trick handcuffs, tinsel, an overfull suitcase, a safe haven that doesn’t feel safe." [Italicized are the ones that at least make a passing appearance.]

Summary: Fleeing from a bad situation at home, Kenna has little choice but to seek refuge with their boyfriend Daniel, and Daniel's partner, Gabriel. In addition to a literal port in a storm, they might just wind up with a guardian demon.

Some angst, slightly dark fantasy.
TW for a mention of domestic violence, and themes about familial rejection. And blasphemy, I guess.

Truth or Dare )

Note in 2023: this is one of my favorite stories I wrote for the challenge, but I think it needs some cleanup. The one person who read it didn't come away with the right conclusion about what Gabriel is, and just in general I think it could use some improvements. But I like the central theme I went with, and still think it has some potential, ha.
mistressofmuses: a stack of books in the colors of the bi pride flag: pink, purple, and blue, in front of a pastel rainbow background (books)
Written for the second day of the 2017 "Holigay" prompt challenge.

The prompt was: "Two or more of your characters are spending time with each other when a blizzard sweeps through the area, snowing them in! Write about how they handle being trapped together with limited supplies."

Summary: Corinne and Wren are snowed into a cave on their way to visit Corinne's family.

Minor angst, fantasy.

White Wolf )
mistressofmuses: a stack of books in the colors of the bi pride flag: pink, purple, and blue, in front of a pastel rainbow background (books)
Written for the first day of the 2017 "Holigay" prompt challenge.

The prompt was: "Two of your characters are going ice skating. It’s not a date – they swear it – but everyone, including their friends, thinks it is."

Summary: Aiden definitely doesn't want to call this a date with Carter. After all, Carter didn't call it one. If he did call it a date, then he might have to face the disappointment of finding out it's not.

Fluffy, slice-of-life.

Ice Dating )

In 2017, the tumblr page [tumblr.com profile] yourbookcouldbegayer ran a holiday event, with 12 prompts for the days leading up to Christmas.

The intent was to write one short story for each prompt, under 8000 words, and starring an lgbtq+ protagonist of any flavor.

These were the prompts: )

Note as of 2023: I only managed to do the first ten days, but it was the first I'd written and shared in several years. I feel like the quality of what I came up with varied pretty wildly, but I really did like a few of them, and hope to someday return to a couple of the ideas!
