Note in 2023:
Back in early 2019, there was a Kingdom Hearts big bang event put together and organized. [The only definite date I recall was that an initial outline was due April 22, 2019]
At that point, it had been more than a decade since I'd written any fic I'd shared. I decided to sign up for this event, using an AU idea I'd been bouncing around my head for a while about superheroes and secret relationships.
(It was once the planning and writing was well underway for this event that I wrote the Inktober fics - if I *hadn't* decided to join this event, I'm not sure I would have written those either.)
The event went on well for quite a while, until unfortunately it collapsed. There was a lot of bad-faith harassment of the mods and of the event accounts early on, mainly centered around typical "anti" talking points... leading to constantly-shifting demands for the event to disallow certain ships, content, ratings, participants, etc. While the event initially tried to come to a "compromise" on some of those demands, the goalposts continually moved, and eventually the mods basically said "fuck it" and removed the restrictions they'd been attempting to compromise on... but I think the damage had already been done. One of the mods in particular continued to be a target for harassment, and she ultimately had to step away from the event because it just wasn't worth the headache.
Fortunately, a few of the other participants were able to salvage the event, and reorganized it as the "Rogue Nebula" event, so that the participants interested in finishing their stories and art could do so!
I succeeded in completing my fic, the first ongoing thing I completed in more than a decade. I remain pretty proud of it, and am so glad that I did end up participating.
